What is the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist program?

  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program, a component of FPL SolarTogether, was created to provide low income customers an opportunity to participate and share in the benefits of Florida-generated solar energy.
  • For the purposes of this program, low income customers include customers who participate in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), and are preapproved to participate in the program.

Who can participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program?

  • Customers who participate in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).
  • The program is available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to subscription availability.

How are customers pre-approved to participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program?

Pre-approved customers are those who have participated in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP), or the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). When will I be able to enroll in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program?

  • We anticipate to open enrollment early 2021.
  • The program is available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to subscription availability.
  • If the program is fully subscribed, customers will be able to join the program’s waitlist and will be notified when more subscriptions become available.

Why am I not eligible to participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program?

  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program, a subset of FPL SolarTogether, was designed for low income customers.
  • For the purposes of this program, low income customers include customers who participate in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as LIHEAP, EHEAP, and WAP and are preapproved to participate in the program.
  • Customers who do not meet these requirements may be eligible to participate in the FPL SolarTogether program, visit FPL.com/SolarTogether to learn more.

How is the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program different from FPL SolarTogether™ and the FPL SolarNow™ program?

  • The FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program is a subset of FPL SolarTogether and is designed to provide low income customers an opportunity to participate and share in the benefits of Florida-generated solar energy.
  • For the purposes of this program, low income customers include customers who participate in certain state, federal, or local assistance programs, such as LIHEAP, EHEAP, and the Weatherization Assistance Program, and are preapproved to participate in the program.
  • The FPL SolarNow program enables participating customers to support the installation of small solar arrays in local communities throughout Florida, such as parks, zoos and museums, and further the education of solar generation. 

If I participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program, how much solar energy can I subscribe to?

Participants in the FPL SolarTogether SunAssist Program can subscribe to have up to 100% of their monthly energy usage to come from solar.

If I participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program, will FPL be installing panels on my roof?

  • No, participants will not have panels installed on their roof or on their property.
  • Participants are subscribing to energy generated by the FPL SolarTogether™ solar power plants. Every month they will receive benefits in the form of monthly bill credits on their energy bill for their share of the solar energy generated by the solar power plants.

Where will the FPL SolarTogether™ solar power plants be built – must I live in the same community as the solar plants?

No, participants do not need to live in the same community as the solar plants but must live within FPL’s service territory. FPL will build, operate, and maintain new solar power plants throughout FPL’s service territory dedicated to the FPL SolarTogether program. 

With my participation, will the solar energy produced through the program be delivered directly to my residence?

  • No, the power generated by FPL SolarTogether solar plants will not be delivered directly to participants’ homes.
  • FPL SolarTogether SunAssist program participants are subscribing to energy generated by FPL SolarTogether solar power plants. Every month, they will receive benefits in the form of monthly bill credits on their energy bill that represents their share of the solar energy generated by the solar power plants.

Does enrolling in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program impact my current electric rate structure?

No, enrolling will not change the number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed monthly and will have no impact on participants’ existing electric rates. 

If I participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program, when will billing begin?

  • After completing the enrollment process, an enrollment confirmation which includes participants’ projected billing start date, will be provided. Participants can also access this information on the SolarTogether™ program dashboard on FPL.com.
  • Participants’ projected billing start date is based on when the solar power plants associated with their subscription(s) are expected to become operational, by summer 2021. 

 

What does the monthly FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist program subscription charge represent?

  • The FPL SolarTogether™ monthly subscription charge for low income participants is a reduced subscription rate that represents the costs for each kilowatt(kW) subscribed and goes toward costs related to building, operating, and maintaining the FPL SolarTogether™ solar plants.
  • A subscription may be purchased in 1 kW increments for a fixed cost of $5.57 per kW. This cost was developed exclusively for the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program to ensure day one bill saving for participants.
  • Participants’ monthly subscription charge is fixed and will remain the same for as long they are in the program.
  • During the enrollment process, customers’ kWh usage will be converted to kW to determine their maximum subscription level. 

What does the monthly FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist program subscription credit represent?

  • FPL SolarTogether™ monthly subscription credit for low income participants represents the participants’ share of the energy generated by the solar power plants.
  • The FPL SolarTogether™ monthly subscription credit is $6.27 per kilowatt subscribed. This credit was developed exclusively for the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program to ensure day one bill saving for participants.
  • For example, a typical customer with a $100 monthly energy bill will have a maximum subscription of 5 kW
    • Monthly Subscription Charge:  $5.57 x 5 kW = $27.85
    • Monthly Subscription Credit:    $6.27 x 5 kW = $31.35
    • For a monthly savings of $3.50 

When can I expect to see the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program lower my monthly FPL energy bill?

Participants in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program will receive day 1 bill savings in the form of monthly bill credits as soon as their subscription is active when the solar power plants associated with their subscription become operational – by summer 2021.

How will I know if I will get the total subscription amount I’m requesting during enrollment?

  • The program is available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to subscription availability.
  • After completing the enrollment process, an enrollment confirmation which includes subscription details and participants’ projected billing start date will be provided. Participants can also access this information on the SolarTogether program dashboard on FPL.com.
  • Participants projected billing start date is based on when the solar power plants associated with their subscription(s) are expected to become operational, by summer 2021. 

 

I have enrolled in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program and my confirmation status is marked “Reserved.” What does it mean if my status is “Reserved?”

Reserved status guarantees your enrollment and subscription in the program. Active billing will begin when the solar power plants associated with your subscription become operational, by summer 2021. 

What if the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program is sold out and I want to participate?

  • If the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program is fully subscribed at the time of enrollment, customers will be able to join the program’s waitlist and be notified when more subscriptions become available.
  • Customers will be notified in the order they joined the waitlist and will have two weeks to complete enrollment.
  • A request to be removed from the waitlist can be made at any time.
  • Subscription availability can occur when an:
    • Existing participant decreases their subscription; or
    • Existing participant unsubscribes from the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program.

After I enroll in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program, can I unsubscribe or make changes to my subscription?

  • Participants in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program may choose to reduce their subscription or unsubscribe from the program at any time after their first billing cycle in the program. However, they will not be able to re-enroll for a 12-month period if they unsubscribe, subject to subscription availability.
  • Participants with a reserved status at time of enrollment will be able to unsubscribe from the program up to 30 days before their projected billing start date.
  • Participants’ projected billing start date is based on when the solar power plants associated with their subscription(s) are expected to become operational, by summer 2021.
  • A projected billing start date will be provided during the enrollment process or can be accessed on the SolarTogether™ program dashboard on FPL.com.
  • Participants may increase their subscription once per year within 30 days following their enrollment anniversary date.

What if I move – is my participation in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program transferable?

Yes, participants can transfer their subscription if they move to another residence within FPL’s service territory and the account remains under the same name.

What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?

  • A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) represents one-megawatt-hour of electricity from a renewable energy center such as the FPL SolarTogether solar energy centers.
  • During the open enrollment process, participants may elect to have the RECs associated with their subscription retired on their behalf. Most customers select this option if they have corporate renewable sustainability goals.
  • Participants who elect to retire RECs are able to legally claim that their home has “gone solar.”
  • Each REC is uniquely serial numbered and tracked in a certified renewable energy registry that documents ownership of the REC. Upon request, FPL will provide the appropriate documentation.

How will the program’s solar power plants perform during/after a hurricane? Will my subscription be impacted?

  • FPL is responsible for operating and maintaining the solar power plants. As a result, there will be no impact to your subscription.
  • Like all FPL solar power plants, the FPL SolarTogether™ plants are built to local wind and building codes. To date, our solar plants have performed extremely well during major storms, including Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Irma. 

Will participants in FPL SolarNow™ be impacted by this new program?

  • No. Customers participating in the FPL SolarNow™ program will not be impacted by this new program.
  • Customers can remain enrolled in FPL SolarNow™ and, if eligible, can also participate in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program.

How does FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program compare to private (rooftop) solar?

  • The FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program was designed to provide low income customers an opportunity to participate and share in the benefits of Florida-generated solar energy.
  • Customers will not be bound to a long-term contract, financing, installation, equipment, or termination fees. There are no credit checks or upfront costs.
  • Participants in the FPL SolarTogether™ SunAssist Program, start saving on their monthly energy bill immediately. Subscriptions are also transferable if participants move within FPL’s service territory.
  • FPL supports private solar, and we continue to work with our customers who choose private solar and their installers to help ensure the safe interconnection of their systems.
