Customers without rooftop solar panels should not have to continue paying extra each month to fund special bill credits for those who do. That’s what happens today under Florida’s more-than-decade-old net metering rules, which were initially implemented to incentivize the adoption of rooftop solar, when it was a new technology. While solar panel prices have plummeted over the years, the rules in Florida have stayed the same. Florida Senate Bill 1024/House Bill 741 aim to modernize these rules to keep a rapidly growing, multi-million-dollar annual subsidy from growing even larger while still fairly and equitably compensating rooftop solar customers for their excess energy.
